Argentina Soccer

Fans of Argentinian side Racing Club have circulated flyers instructing their players to deliberately lose to Quilmes on Friday evening in a ploy to help relegate despised rivals Independiente from the Primera Division as pay-back for an incident in 1983 when Independiente supposedly deliberately threw a game – also against Quilmes – that saw Racing jettisoned from the Argentine top tier.

As the old saying goes, revenge is a dish best served 30 years down the line.

The Racing fans’ flyer looks a bit like this, telling the club’s players that they will “rot in hell” if they don’t lose against Quilmes…

Independiente are currently 11th in the Clausura table, seven points above the relegation zone, but a Quilmes victory over Racing Club would theoretically plunge them closer to the dotted line of doom.

That said, Quilmes are currently several places above Independiente in the table so Racing Club deliberately losing to them probably wouldn’t make a jot of difference in reality.

Hey ho, you should never let a small thing like “reality” get in the way of a long, bitter and largely pointless football rivalry.

Scratch all that. We totally forgot that Argentinian relegation is all arse-over-tit and decided by taking the average of the last three seasons – a measure that was originally put in place to protect the big sides from going down on the back of one dodgy season.

Doh!

To condense 3 words into one abbreviation:

    WTF?

Ridiculous! If United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool etc have a shit one they DESERVE to be relegated.

Is that seriously the way Argentine football works?

Be totally shit one season, but hey you scraped through in 12th the past 2 seasons so all’s good, and the newly promoted team with no revenue that fought hard but on the last day of the season managed 1 place above relegation get fucked?

    Wow.

Actually, Independiente is on the verge of relegation. Quilmes can be easily saved by that win over Racing, so it’s completely possible that Racing let themselves lose just to make it reeeeally difficult for Indepentiente to get out of the relegation zone. Check the relegation table:
