Faced with the very real and very immediate threat of being relegated down to the third tier of Brazilian football, desperate Serie B side Portuguesa have gone with a “Hail Mary” approach to staving off the dreaded drop.

With just ten games left to play, Portuguesa have turned to renowned hypnotist Olimar Tesser in a last-ditch attempt to haul themselves out of the mire.

Portuguesa coach Vagner Benazzi said:

“I don’t like to miss out on a good opportunity. I know what he has done elsewhere and I want him to work with my players before games.

“There will be limits – I am the boss – and he will not disrupt the technical or physical side.

“But I accept his role due to the situation the club finds itself in. It’s a desperate situation.”

Tesser explains his methods thus:

“I work with the human being, the man, and this is reflected on the pitch.

If a player thinks he can bend iron and walk on glass, he can do anything in the game. The brain can’t tell the two things apart.

“Two minutes of training under hypnosis have the same effect as 20 minutes without.”

All well and good, but the club were second-bottom on Tesser’s arrival at the beginning of the week – however, a 0-1 defeat to Vasco da Gama on Tuesday evening saw them sink to the very foot of Serie B.

That’s that out the window then.

Anyway, the Gloucester City team of 1959 called; they want their miracle cure back…
