Sunderland 1-1 Southampton – Premier League – 12th May 2013

Britain Soccer Premier League

A hard-fought draw at the Stadium of Light on Sunday saw Southampton rubber-stamp their place in next season’s Premier League while Sunderland should survive should Wigan fail to win at Arsenal on Tuesday evening.

Both goals came int he second period, courtesy of Phil Bardsley on 68 minutes and then sub Jason Puncheon, eight minutes later.

The Saints were arguably the better of the two sides on the day but the draw should see both teams facing off once again next season in the top tier.

I am always dumbfounded by the media when they fail to do their maths. Saints are not ‘all but safe’, they are simply ‘safe’ – mathematically! Why? Becuase Wigan play Villa last game of the season. Whatever the result Saints stay up. Only Wigan, Sunderland and Villa can now be relegated.

No, us Saints are “virtually” safe, not “mathematically” safe. The reason is that IF Wigan win both their final games and IF Sunderland get at least a draw at Spurs, then Wigan will finish on 41pts, with Sunderland on 40pts (with a goal difference of -12)and Aston Villa on 40pts with a goal difference of -23 at best. Saints are currently on 40pts with a goal difference of -11. Therefore, if we were to lose 13-0 to Stoke on Sunday, our goal difference would then be -24 and we’d fall below Villa. (However, having watched Stoke on Sunday, I would doutb they could score 13 goals all season, let alone on one match.)
