We usually try to keep things on the humorous side of the tracks here at Pies, but there’s very few laughs to be got out of the whole Adam Johnson child sex case. After the former England winger pleaded guilty this week to one count of sexual activity with a child and one charge of grooming, sportswear company Adidas terminated their contract with the 28-year-old. And now, his club Sunderland have decided to sack the star.

The news came on Thursday evening, the day before the former Middlesbrough player is set to stand trial at Bradford Crown Court. The Black Cats initially suspended Johnson when he was arrested back in March last year, before lifting the ban after talking to his agent and the PFA. But now, in light of his guilty pleas, the club have terminated his contract permanently.

Here’s the statement released by the club…

Capture

Fair dues to Sunderland for, in this instance, acting swiftly and decisively over what is a rather horrible situation.

I read that the Adidas sponsorship was worth only £10k a year – pretty much 1-n-half days wage for him, so hardly a great miss. I wonder if Sunderland would have sacked him if he was six months into a 5 year contract, or if they’d just paid £20-25m for him? It’s certainly easier to take the moral high ground when one of your assests is in the final six months of a contract and not the first. Or for that matter, would they have sacked him if he’d scored 15 goals this season for example and perhaps would keep them safe from relegation? I’m not so sure they’d be too quick to “do the right thing” in one of those scenarios. The reality is it just means he’s a good player now available on a free transfer for someone to pick up the second he is able to get back to football, just like Chelsea effectively handed someone a £15m striker for free when they sacked Mutu years ago – and I’m sure there will be a few clubs still interested in taking him, should he be eligible to play.

i wonder what his missus must think of all this, seeing as how her cashcow -i mean, ‘soulmate’- wont be having a five figure pay cheque going into the account every week. (john terry can sign for sunderland on a pre-contract now, can’t he? she might get lonely in that big house all alone)
