On the 13th of July 2011, photographer Joe Armao and video journo Dave Pavlich combined their superpowers and endeavoured to capture the friendly game between Melbourne Victory and Celtic at AAMI Park Melbourne using a mix of time-lapse video and tilt-shift photography (a camera/focus trick that makes everything look like a model village).

The results were really rather wonderful…

PHEWS all round for Celtic. A two-goal lead and a clean sheet in the first leg against Utrecht should really be enough to see them through to the group stages of the Europa League. Celtic’s goals came from Efrain Juarez – who looks a solid signing – and the mercurial Georgios Samaras, who had a fine game.

RANGERS 1-0 Celtic – The Gers are set to beat Old Firm rivals Celtic to the signing of Manchester City winger Vladimir Weiss, on a season-long loan deal.

City are happy to loan out the 20-year-old Slovakian international, who was linked with a move to Celtic earlier this month. But it now appears Rangers have beaten the Hoops to the punch.

The Daily Record claim Weiss will undergo a medical and hold talks with Rangers this morning before sealing a move to Ibrox.

Good move by Rangers, not just in getting one over on their Glaswegian rivals, but also because Weiss is a very talented young player, who should torment full-backs in the SPL.

After the spirit-crushing 3-0 defeat at Braga in the first leg, Celtic’s Champions League adventure was over almost before it kicked off. And when Braga’s Paulo Cesar made it 4-0 on aggregate with a header midway through the first half, the game really was up for Neil Lennon’s side.

The Hoops battled gamely after the break though, and scored through Gary Hooper and new signing Efrain Juarez – one of the main positives for the SPL club on a frustrating night – to at least boost morale.

Lennon was quick to put a coat of gloss on a very disappointing result:

“Overall, I’m delighted with the performance and intensity and all the things you ask for – commitment and passion,” Celtic’s boss said.

“The pace we played at and the passing was very pleasing.

“At half-time we just asked the players to win the game and I thought we deserved to win.”

Celtic now drop down into the Europa League qualifying section, which is much more their level at the moment. Braga look a tidy, skilful side and they will test better teams than Celtic.

Overall, it’s more proof of how Scottish football has fallen behind leagues such as Portugal’s. Celtic dont’ meet teams of the calibre of Braga often enough in the SPL. So it’s no big shock that they were caught cold.

Juarez, a midfielder who can also play at full-back (or vice versa – Celtic will probably use him foremost at the back), could play a part in Wednesday’s Champions League qualifier against Braga in Portugal, having received his work permit a few days ago.

This is a useful signing for the Hoops.

“I didn’t have to think twice,” Juarez told BBC Scotland about his choice of new club. “I remember the [1983 Uefa Cup] final against Porto in Sevilla.

“They are amazing fans – 70,000 fans went to Sevilla. Only a few clubs would have this kind of support follow them.”

Aw, you say all the right things, Efrain. A good start.

The headlines from today’s Champions League & Europa League draws (okay, headlines is a stretch):

Champions League:

Celtic play Braga of Portugal in the Champions League third qualifying round (away leg first for the Bhoys). Braga have never played in the CL before, but I’d say Portugal’s league is stronger than Scotland’s, so it won’t be easy.

Europa League:

Liverpool will play either Rabotnicki (from Macedonia) or Mika (Armenia) in the third qualifying round. Should be a comfortable win for the Reds, though I’m no expert on Macedonian or Armenian football. The first leg will be Roy Hodgson’s first competitive game in charge.

Hibernian will face Videoton of Hungary or Slovenia’s Maribor. Maribor should win that – they’d be quite tough opponents for Hibs.

Motherwell will meet Norwegian side Aalesund if they get past Breidablik (Iceland) in their second qualifying round. The first leg finished 1-0 to the SPL side but that was at home so they’re up against it.

Joe Ledley, Cardiff City

Joe Ledley, the young Welsh winger who really caught the eye in his time at Cardiff City, is currently a free agent – thanks, Blackpool – and in search of a new club. It looks like Celtic will win the 23-year-old’s coveted signature.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Ledley admitted he was “impressed” by his recent visit to Parkhead.

“It’s not a done deal yet. Obviously I’ve got a lot to think about,” Ledley said.

“I just came up for a look around, but I’ve been very impressed. Will I be back? We’ll see!”

Ooh, the tease! Reading between the lines though, I’d be amazed if Ledley didn’t end up at Celtic for the start of the new season. Which would be a kick in the teeth for Stoke City, AS Roma and Birmingham City, who have all been linked with Ledley.

Celtic and Ledley would be a good fit, in my view. The fans in Scotland would certainly appreciate him staying true to his Celtic roots, especially at the expense of Premier League clubs.
