Chelsea – Tottenham Hotspur – Premier League – 24th March 2012

Chelsea failed to make up any significant ground on the top four at Stamford Bridge on Saturday after struggling against a Spurs side who would have been more deserving of the win.

Indeed, it took the Blues over 70 minutes to even get a shot on target in a game which failed to really come to life until late on.

Juan Mata did strike the post with a fabulous free-kick in the second-half but the visitors, eager to get back in front of rivals Arsenal in the table, looked the more likely to score as the game entered its final stages. Gareth Bale saw a header come back off the bar while Emmanuel Adebayor rounded ‘keeper Petr Cech only to see Gary Cahill stop his shot from ending up in the back of the Blues’ net.

While Tottenham stay in fourth, Chelsea are now a worrying five points off a Champions League berth.

Still wouldn’t rule out Chelsea from snatching 4th place.

Spurs have Swansea, Sunderland & Norwich up next. None of those ties are gifts.

Chelsea have Villa & Wigan. As average as Chelsea can be at times, they are nowhere near as mediocre as Liverpool so 6 points in the bag for those two.

The fly in the ointment for Chelsea will be the Benfica ties. Do they REALLY think they can progress in the Champions League? What would they prefer? 4th place and CL next year, or beat Benfica and be raped by Barcelona / Milan?

    Tough call, Roberto. Tough call.

I think Chelsea can make easy work off Benfica. Milan is absolute garbage, their win over Arsenal was just something i like to call ‘every tard has his day’.
So Chelsea may indeed get pretty far provided they do not face Barcelona directly after Benfica game.
I like Di Mateo, hopefully it works out for him…
