Basically, the poor bugger didn’t have a chance…

Perhaps all those of a Tottenham persuasion should stop mithering about the ‘did it?/didn’t it?s’ of this one and start paying the other four goals they conceded a bit of attention!

how could he even see from there? shouldn’t he just call it with benefit of the doubt to the defending side?

  2. Adil says:

He didn’t flag for it. It was the referee who made the decision.

  3. G says:

@Chris – First goal good strike against the run of play. Second – that. Got one back, but needed another two, brought defoe on early, left too much space for the Chelsea midfield. That goal DID make a huge difference.

  4. Tom says:

Addy was useless, G. Nothing would stop Lampard’s free kick.

  5. Anonymous says:

Spurs needed Chelsea to ‘score’ that second as much as Chelsea did. It opened the game up, bombed Spurs forward. Honestly, before we went 3-1 up I was convinced that Spurs were gonna get the equalizer. They had all the momentum, they were piling on pressure. Shoddy defending and classy Mata made sure though that it didn’t matter.

Seriously I’d understand if the score finished 2-1 or 3-1 that Spurs would have a lot to feel bitter about, but yeah 5-1. Says it all.

  6. Wednesday says:

I’m more upset about Cech being on the pitch and Chelsea having 11 men for 90 minutes. That said, what a pathetic display from almost everyone involved: awful play by Spurs, cheating by Chelsea, terrible refereeing and disgusting behavior by Chelsea fans.

  7. Rubidium says:

Must have been a very tall linesman if that was his eye view.

  8. Jay F says:

What I also find disgusting (being of Jewish heritage) is the amount of times I had to be subjected to chants of ‘Yid Army’ by Spurs fans yesterday at Wembley.. Chelsea have done lots to clamp down on racist abuse by fans attending games but this obviously does not apply to Toteenham fans?!

  9. Mr. Sparkle says:

I’m sure the linesman is a lot richer now.

  10. Alan Bennett says:

I hope that everybody who has now seen the stills captured from the same angle that Mr Atkinson was positioned will withdraw their adamant comments of yesterday and today. The ball was clearly over the line. Well done referee for a very good decision

  11. Adam says:

@Alan Bennet, I have see those stills. It is clear that the whole ball is not over the line. Not a very good decision by the referee. Sorry.

  12. L. Evans says:

As a tottenham fan, i am admittidly angry with the refereeing team, and yes if it didnt go in, it could have been a different game, and of course cech should of got a red… but at the end of the day, we lost 5-1.

  13. dc says:

EITHER WAY, like the announcer said, should have been called for a foul by Terry long before Mata even kicked the ball– Terry pretty blatantly bowls over AE and Cudicini

  14. WildScotsman6 says:

all the ref proved there is that he really didn’t see the ball go in at all and purely guessed it did. why would you do that? shocking decision….

  15. Chris Hoy says:

Only an idiot can say this had no baring on the game. Spurs were having the better of the game until 1-0, great goal but against the run of play. Then this lunacy happened. The linesman didn’t see it go in and didn’t give the goal, fair enough. The referee didn’t/couldn’t see it go over the line (because it didn’t) yet he gave it. Absolutely shocking decision. The man should be demoted. It opened the game up but that obviously wasn’t in Spurs’ best interest because they got absolutely mauled chasing that second goal. Its hard to watch these games lately with the amount of shitty officiating that’s going on with dives as well. How can you chastise Young for diving and the referee for giving a penalty and ruining the United game and claim that Spurs got what they deserved because Chelsea were better. I’m not a Spurs fan but this is a bitter pill to swallow. I sympathise. it’d be hard to take the slanging in work today from Chelsea fans.

  16. Jared says:

Chris, did a Spurs supporter bed your crush or something? You seem to have a real issue with Tottenham on this site…

@G: We’ll never truly know if it did or didn’t, that’s the beauty of linear time.

really? because I clearly saw it NOT go over the line on American Tv instant replay….

    I guess we do know.

  18. Hugh says:

    @ USA

They were talking about whether it made a difference to the outcome, not if it went over the line or not. Go back to watching your major league soccer.
