Tottenham Hotspur 1-3 Benfica – Europa League Last 32 1st Leg – 13th March 2014
Spurs were well beaten by a very clever Benfica side in north London on Thursday night, with the 3-1 scoreline leaving the Lilywhites’ European adventure hanging by the thinnest of threads.
The Portuguese side were always a danger on the break despite Tottenham starting the game well and eventually it was the visitors who took the lead. Rodrigo was the scorer after a swift counter-attack to give Benfica a 1-0 lead at the break. In the second-half dodgy defending would see Brazilian international centre-half Luisao score twice with a Christian Eriksen free-kick all the home side could muster in response.
Despite the sale of Gareth Bale in the summer, Tottenham fans were full of hope for the new season, with a plethora of big money signings brought in. However, now the club look to have taken a couple of steps backward, with a top quality new manager surely needed as soon as possible.
