Besiktas 1-0 Tottenham Hotspur – Europa League Group C – 11th December 2014
In a game marred by two floodlight failures, Tottenham failed to cement top spot in Group C, with Turkish giants Besiktas securing a precious 1-0 win.
The visitors started brightly and, after the first of two delays due to floodlight malfunction, they came close to scoring through Roberto Soldado and Nacer Chadli. However, having failed to make their dominance count in the first 45, the Lilywhites found themselves behind courtesy of Cenk Tosun’s finish from an Olcay Sahan centre. That goal had come after Tosun had hit the frame of the Spurs’ goal just minutes earlier and for the rest of the half, the hosts looked the more likely to score. However, in the end, they’d have to (happily) settle for the one-goal victory.
The defeat sees Spurs drop to second in Group C, behind Besiktas, meaning that the north Londoners could now face some tricky opposition in the next round.
