Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Sheffield United – Capital One Cup Semi-Final 1st Leg – 21st January 2014
Tottenham started with Emmanuel Adebayor leading the line as well as captaining the side against Nigel Clough’s well-drilled Sheffield United side.
The home side struggled to click into gear in the first-half, with Eric Dier registering their only shot on target, courtesy of a close-range header. With the Lilywhites’ second-half performance not much better than the first, Mauricio Pochettino sent on Roberto Soldado for Emmanuel Adebayor and Mousa Dembélé for Ryan Mason. Soon after that change, the breakthrough finally came for the hosts, after clever play from Soldado eventually saw Jay McEveley handle in the box. Andros Townsend fired home the penalty (his fourth spot-kick success of the season) which would ultimately put the north Londoners, who were rather disappointing on the night, in the driving seat ahead of the return leg at Bramall Lane.
