Ex-Tottenham full-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto has renounced all sporting sponsorship deals, claiming he’d rather play in the cheapo boots he buys online than live the life of a corporate whore.

Assou-Ekotto, who now plies his trade in Ligue 1 with Saint-Etienne, told Canal +:

I’d rather be free than prostitute myself for a sponsor.

In all honesty, when you’re an African player, it’s not that interesting to have a sponsor.

When you’re European, it’s better because business is done in Europe.

The former Cameroon international went on to explain that he acquires his gear the same way most people do: by trawling Ebay for the cheapest half-decent pair available.

I buy shoes for €30 (approx. £23). It’s a good price for comfortable boots. You can find them on Ebay, and they’re not expensive.

Being fashionable is expensive, but you’re more distinguished to be vintage.

Good old Benny. The man just don’t give a f**k.

Of course, we’re talking about a professional footballer who has openly admitted on several occasions that he barely even likes his chosen sport and considers his day job to be nothing more than a means to pay the gas bill come the end of the month.

That said, his Instagram is chock full of photos of spanking new boots and trainers that all appeared to be labelled up especially for him, so we’re not entirely sure whether we buy into his frugal, anti-shill mantra or not.
