Christian Eriksen came tip-toeing from the bench to snaffle a late winner for Tottenham against Inter Milan and thus keep his side’s hopes alive of squeaking into the Champions League knockout phase.
With Wembley as cavernous as ever, Spurs quite simply had to beat their Italian opponents to avoid being buffeted out of the competition.
As 79 minutes of nearlies and not-quites passed, it looked for all the world like Mauricio Pochettino’s charges were chugging towards the inevitable.
Then, having only been on the pitch a short while, Eriksen made the breakthrough by applying an emphatic finish to the approach play of Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli…
The home side then closed out the game to keep hold of their vital points – points which mean they will qualify for the last 16 should they manage to match (or better) Inter’s result against PSV in the final round of group games on 11th December.
The only minor issue is that Spurs will be attempting to do so while playing Barcelona.
