Christian Eriksen came tip-toeing from the bench to snaffle a late winner for Tottenham against Inter Milan and thus keep his side’s hopes alive of squeaking into the Champions League knockout phase.

With Wembley as cavernous as ever, Spurs quite simply had to beat their Italian opponents to avoid being buffeted out of the competition.

As 79 minutes of nearlies and not-quites passed, it looked for all the world like Mauricio Pochettino’s charges were chugging towards the inevitable.

Then, having only been on the pitch a short while, Eriksen made the breakthrough by applying an emphatic finish to the approach play of Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli…

The home side then closed out the game to keep hold of their vital points – points which mean they will qualify for the last 16 should they manage to match (or better) Inter’s result against PSV in the final round of group games on 11th December.

The only minor issue is that Spurs will be attempting to do so while playing Barcelona.

I think Tottenham are a very overrated team. I look at them like Arsenal, but with a much better striker. They’re nice to watch, they play nice football but I don’t see them winning anything, not even close. I don’t know, maybe they are too naive. I think Eriksen and Kane should move on to bigger clubs, just like Bale and Modric did. These two are really great players and can accomplish so much (but not at Tottenham).

That’s quite an original and fresh opinion Johnny. All Spurs fans are really troubled now, after your cutting edge analysis here.

Sorry fellas, I didn’t know there were Tottenham fans in here! I thought londoners only supported Spurs until they reach the adult age of 12 – then they moved on to bigger clubs, just like the players, d’you know what I mean? Anyway, I am sorry. I hope you’re still celebrating that 2007–08 League Cup title because that – in my opinion – was one of the highlights of human history.
