A single, singularly elegant and record-breaking goal from Harry Kane was enough to secure Tottenham a place in the Champions League quarter-finals with back-to-back wins over Borussia Dortmund.

Carrying over a 3-0 lead from the first leg in Germany, Spurs were forced to weather a yellow onslaught in the first half of the second.

Indeed, several instinctive saves from Hugo Lloris and a brilliant goal-saving block from Jan Vertonghen ensured things remained goalless at the break.

The visitors took the lead just a few minutes after the restart via one of the few outright chances forged by either side.

Indeed, the goal came from nowhere, with Moussa Sissoko pouncing on a loose ball and splitting the Dortmund defence in twain with a precise ball into Kane, who – as is so often the case – never looked like missing once he had the goalkeeper squared up…

Things then began to mellow out as Dortmund struggled to make inroads and Spurs defended diligently – the impeccable Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and Lloris all excelling amid the suffocating, intimidating atmosphere of a booming Westfalenstadion in full voice.

Half-chances came and went but Spurs eventually managed to run down the clock to nought to go waltzing into the final eight.

Said goal was Kane’s 24th in Europe, which moves him past Jermain Defoe and out in front on his own as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer in continental competition.

With a conversion rate like his, it’s probably safe to say it’s only a matter of time before he leads the way for Spurs on all fronts.
