Liverpool went clambering back to the summit of the Premier League after a 90th-minute own-goal saw Jurgen Klopp’s seize a bewildering win over Tottenham.

Man City’s victory over Fulham on Saturday meant that the Reds needed to beat Spurs at Anfield to reclaim top spot amid what is proving to be a classic tit-for-tat title run-in.

Roberto Firmino put Liverpool ahead with quarter of an hour gone when he headed home another excellent enticing Andy Robertson cross from slap, bang in front of Hugo Lloris’ goal.

Tottenham’s equaliser came in the second half through Lucas Moura, who applied the finishing touch to a sweeping blitz attack that was sparked by a tremendous quick freekick from Harry Kane.

That set up a tense finale in which Liverpool turned the screw, desperately seeking that all important winner.

That said, Moussa Sissoko was presented with a grand chance to steal the points for Spurs, only for the marauding French midfielder to bring a swift counter-attack to a shuddering halt by walloping his shot over the crossbar…

The mounting pressure was finally relieved in Liverpool’s favour in the very last minute of normal time when Lloris fumbled a fairly soft Mohamed Salah header directly into Alderweireld’s shins, with the ball then bobbling over the line amid mass flappage…

And so it finished, with Lloris proving once again that he just can’t quite be considered an ‘upper echelon’ goalkeeper. Too many panicky and largely avoidable errors.

Liverpool are now two points ahead of Man City, who have a game in hand on Jurgen Klopp’s side and the title chase really begins to gallop into its final stretch.

Exciting times lay ahead.

Frequent reminder that Spurs paid £30m to Newcastle for Sissoko… Cheers Spurs!

All my life I’ve been saying that Lloris is overrated. And how exactly is Alderweireld any better than Smalling or Lindelof? I don’t get the United fans wishing for his signing. He’s good but not exactly an upgrade on what they already have.
