Tottenham Hotspurs' Luka Modric watches from the stands during the Pre Season Friendly at White Hart Lane, London.

Arry Redknapp “didn’t want this game”, so to say Villarreal wanted it more… well, it didn’t take much for the Primera Liga side to overcome a jetlagged Tottenham team in full-on ‘stroll’ mode.

“The visitors looked fresher and more alert, and twice took advantage of lax defending to pierce Tottenham through the centre.

“Former Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi converted both times, the first after a simple passing move and the second after a careless error by Michael Dawson.

“Spurs started the second half more brightly and Mexican striker Giovani dos Santos pulled a goal back after Peter Crouch had put him through. But Rossi settled matters – and sealed his hat-trick – with a deflected long range effort shortly afterwards, and Marco Ruben completed the rout.” [Telegraph]

The scoreline doesn’t look good for Spurs but results in pre-season friendlies are rarely indicative of what happens when the real games begin.

Stinging pre-season games together every few days is undoubtedly good for fitness. What I can’t fathom is jetting all over the world to play them.

Comercially, it makes all the sense in the world. But if a team has a shite season due to poor preparation you make a huge financial loss anyway.

I’m grateful we’ve stayed in and around Central Europe this time.

Ollie, Newcastle lost 6-1 to the Orient last pre-season, then went on to win the league! :oD

english clubs, don’t pick a spanish opponent, you’ll just get thrashed. spain’s 7th best team deserves to be in the champions league not england’s 4th.
