Who do you think you are kidding, Mr Fowler?

With that much-vaunted Indian Premier League payday postponed for the moment (it was meant to be starting towards the end of the month), that international man of mystery, Robbie Fowler, is back in Blighty and looks set to join Championship side Blackpool until the end of the season.

The 36-year-old will face stiff competition for a striking berth with the Tangerines, with another couple of old-timers, Kevin Phillips (38) and Brett Omerod (36) also in contention but Blackpool boss Ian Holloway is convinced the former Liverpool idol can contribute to the season run-in. He said:

“People might say that’s another older player but it’s about the balance between the young and the old. Players like Kevin Phillips, Keith Southern and Brett Ormerod keep the young ones going and show them how to do it.”

“Robbie’s just another one of those. Has he got some quality, and can he play a pass and can he score a goal? Yes he can, so it may sound outrageous to some people, but not to me.”

I can see it now – Ian Holloway as Captain Mainwaring, leading his Dad’s Army team to glory and a place back in the Premier League. Possibly.
