Crane your necks skyward and rejoice people, for it is over… it’s finally over. As announced on the Tottenham website but minutes ago, Luka Modric is finally (as near as damn-it) a Real Madrid player…

Said Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez:

“The strong relationship and affinity between our two clubs has resulted in the cementing of a longer-term partnership and the successful transfer of Luka Modric. We are delighted to welcome Luka and look forward to working closely with Tottenham in the coming years.”

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy also had his ten-penneth:

“Luka has been a terrific player for us and, whilst we preferred not to part with him, we are pleased that it is to Real Madrid, a club with which we now look forward to sharing a long and productive partnership.”

Modric will now undergo a medical at the Bernabeu later today after Levy accepted a €42 million (£34 million) bid that will also see Spurs and Real sign a ‘partnership agreement’, meaning the two clubs will ‘work together in respect of players, coaching, best practices and commercial relationships’ from henceforth.

Word is (from MARCA) that Levy also rejected a ‘£35 million-plus-Raul Meireles’ offer from Chelsea for Modric first thing this morning, though whether there’s any truth in that or not is subject to conjecture.

And breath.

So that’s £34 million’s worth of spending money in the piggy bank at Spurs – which, we assume, will finally open the floodgates as far as bringing in reinforcements is concerned. It’s a safe bet that a striker will be high on the list, but which one is anybody’s guess.

The safe money seems to be on Shakhtar winger Willian being AVB’s first flutter with ‘the Modric money’, but who would the Spurs fans out there prefer to see it spluffed on Spurs fans?
