At the beginning of last season, there was a lot of excitement Trentside as Schteve McLaren attempted the transfer coup of the summer – bringing highly-rated Dutch winger, Wesley Verhoek, to Forest. All the press reports said he was one of the most exciting prospects in the Netherlands, flirting with the national squad and destined for a Premier League move.

However, he was wooed by the ginger mop of Schteve, and was as close to signing as could be. His Facebook page and the Forest website all but confirmed his signing, and the Internet was littered with pictures of him posing with our European Cups and by the Trent. All he had to do was sign his name.

That night, Nottingham, and the rest of the UK’s major cities, descended into rioting. The burning cars of Nottingham’s usually oh so peaceful streets must have spooked him, as the next day he declared the deal was off, as he found – just 24 hours after entering the foreign lands of the UK – that he was homesick. We were left with Matt Derbyshire.

One slight quibble, Blackburn weren’t champions in 1994, Man Utd were.

Though a side note on Muller, apparently he rang back a few months later when Walker had been sacked and Joe Royle was in charge, apparently he’d had a change of heart and decided to accept the original terms. By then though, someone called Duncan Ferguson was on the scene and Peter Johnson allegedly told Muller where to go.

I think Jack didn’t regret it, Tim Sherwood had a more decorated career anyway. 3 England caps + captaining a team to the Premier League takes some beating.
