Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Liverpool v Chelsea - Anfield

Luis Suarez wants to leave Liverpool because he is better than them. He knows he’s able to play a much higher level than “upper mid-table” and would like to do so. He wants to play for Real Madrid.

All this is fine and too be expected of a man who is clearly an entire strata of talent better than almost all of his teammates. However, Suarez is also keen to engineer himself an “out” at Anfield as he wishes to leave with the fans on his side.

Therefore, Suarez has chosen to peddle the stupefyingly ironic line that he is being harassed out of the country by the nation’s media, who have, in his own words, “never judged him for his play” but rather on “his attitude”.

Strange that they’d focus on the attitude of a man found guilty of racist abuse, biting an opponent and multiple other absences of basic sporting dignity.

Suarez told Uruguayan television show RR Gol:

“Ever since I arrived I have felt bad, they have never judged me for my play but with the attitude that he dives, protests, makes gestures, racism… everything.

“They have never spoken well of me. For that reason, when I was told I could win the Player of the Year award, I said: “I will not get excited as I know that I will never win an important award in England.”

“Without any proof they gave me an eight match ban, but with Terry, where they had proof, lip-readers, they gave him four, I’m South American and I think that’s the root of all of this.”

“Liverpool is a club that I dreamt about playing for as a boy. I have been with great players there, they know me and I would love to continue for many more years at Liverpool. The stadium is spectacular, the fans are phenomenal: people with tattoos of me, things that I could never have imagined.

“After the [Evra] suspension people would come up to me, this is something that really touched me and they would say: “Luis forget everything and stay.”

“But I can’t forget as it was something that I had to suffer, that my family had to suffer and away from football I have a family to support and who are hurt by these things. “

“About a week ago I was walking in a shopping centre near Manchester and three or four guys asked me for a photo.”

“While we were posing for it my wife said to me “Luis, get out of the photo”. She noticed they were making biting gestures. I was with my wife and my daughter. Things like that get on your nerves.

“My wife was on the brink of tears and the blokes ran off laughing. You get tired of stuff like that.”

Oh, I dunno…maybe stop biting other human beings then?

Christ! If he truly believes he is the victim in all this, then the kind of metal gymnastics he’s had to perform to reach that conclusion are utterly baffling and actually perversely impressive too.

Firstly Luis, we’re fairly sure that the Spanish media are every bit as critical and judgmental as their English counterparts so best of luck on that front and, secondly, can you not see why an outsider looking in may choose to judge a convicted racist biter who has been banned for a total of 18 games in the space of his two-and-a-half years in England on his character from time to time?

You made yourself the story. You have no-one to blame but yourself. If you want to leave, at least have the dignity to do it quietly.

Maybe he thinks that in Madrid people won’t give him so much attention? After all, he’ll be teammate with Pepe, you can’t seem much worse than him…

  2. Daley says:

    Utter bullshit.
Spanish media are critical but inquisition was last seen in Spain in medieval ages. Suarez convicted racist? Only in an inquisition-like process, manipulated from the start to the very end.
Small wonder in such a country. Crooks and liars knighted, Prime Minister talking about apalling examples when a leading bank in the country is a convicted of money laundring with Iran by US authorities.
Could you pls have your referendum about EU membership as soon as possible? We are tired of your PM asking all the time for exemptions and look folrward to seeing you out of the door. Just have dignity to leave the EU quietly.

  3. Jim G says:

The Spanish media may very well be critical and judgemental, but they wouldn’t be hypocritical enough to pretend that Suarez “racially abused” Evra. Suarez called him black, and (last time I looked) Evra is black.
He certainly won’t get other managers like Pulis castigating him for diving (anyone ever heard of Bale?), or managers like Ferguson saying Liverpool should “sack him”, whilst conveniently forgetting misdemeanours from his own players (Kung Fu, elbows, shagging your brother’s wife etc). And I’m pretty certain that the Spanish PM (if they have one) will air his opinions on how to conduct oneself.
The bite was ridiculous, but the furore afterwards was worse. With choppers like that he didn’t even leave a mark – that’s SOME bite that….!!
I hope he stays, because our League is sadly lacking in real quality or superstars. But if you do go, good luck. Yes, you did make yourself the story, but your card was well and truly marked the day you embarrassed Man United all on your own in the 3-1 at Anfield, got a standing ovation, and well and truly mugged off Fergie and Evra. And we all know you aren’t allowed to do that – especially a Johnny Foreigner from the wrong side of the tracks.

  4. JLBK says:

I don’t know what’s more insane, the acts committed by Suarez or the naiive and borderline delusional defense of him by Liverpool fans. Lots of racism involved in his defense on the part of these fans too. If you have anything good to say about him other than he is a brilliant footballer, you are living in a strange world.

Bye Suarez, don’t like the door hit you in the a$$!

  5. archibald says:

Suarez is a dick and the English papers are almost all entirely sensationalist, tabloid garbage. They’re a match made in circle jerk heaven.

  6. One Man Went to Mow says:

    @Jim G

‘I hope he stays, because our League is sadly lacking in real quality or superstars.’

Mata, Hazard, Bale, RVP, Kagawa, Cazorla, Silva etc. etc. I could go on. All these players are better than Suarez and non of them carry any of the baggage he does. Even after the Hazard incident with the ball boy the player apologised, accepted his ban and the whole thing was never mentioned again, Suarez constantly drags up old news himself (This article being a fine example). Suarez is big fish in an increasingly small pond at Liverpool and the only people that will miss him are Liverpool fans. If he does make it to a team like Madrid he will be found out so fast he won’t know what hit him.

  7. syndex says:

“without any proof they gave me an eight match ban, but with Terry, where they had proof, lip-readers, they gave him four, I’m South American and I think that’s the root of all of this.” – I am breaking it down wrong but is he saying they were racist as they judged another racist less racist than me because he was English which is racist. which kind of makes my brain hurt

  8. SL says:

The official line is Terry only said it once while Suarez said it multiple times.

The reality is Terry was an England player at the time, not just being English so Suarez is wrong. Being English isnt the difference, playing for England is.

  9. GF says:

The difference in treatment between Suarez and others is strange, considering how badly behaved players like Terry and Ferdinand are, and Keane & Cantona were. The attacks on Suarez are constant and out of proportion. Yes Suarez called Evra black. If he’d called me white I doubt I would have complained. I am white. But after that particular incident I remember seeing a Youtube video with Evra shouting F****** Ni****s! He was not reprimanded by the press for this. The media in this country go for easy targets only and would never harass a black player the way they are going after Suarez. Cowardly and self-righteous, sycophantic hypocrites…..and R swipes as well.

  10. Jim G says:

    @One Man Went to Mow.

Mata and Hazard will be stars in the near future, but they aren’t yet, in my opinion.
Bale is the most re-saleable commodity currently, but only pulled his finger out of his arse after Christmas. Agreed, after Christmas he was awesome.
If you really think the rest are as good as Suarez (Kagawa???!!) then you are a loon. Suarez is currently the 3rd best player in the World after Messi and Ronaldo, and to pretend otherwise simply shows your blue-eyed bias and disdain for Liverpool I guess.Funny that Gary Neville hates Liverpool with a passion, but is one of the only people to have talked sense about him.

  11. Rob says:

Great article. I’m a Liverpool fan and am sick to death of him; I love him as a player but hate everything else that comes with him.
I can’t believe that he and other LFC fans can continue to believe that he is a victim; we’ll miss his goals and breath taking skills but if you don’t want to play for Liverpool just piss off. Good luck with the Spanish press.

  12. marajonna says:

He said he didn’t want evra to touch him because he doesn’t touch black people. That’s fairly horrific.

He was banned for 7 games in Holland for biting and no one thought that was too much, he reoffended and got a bigger ban. No surprise there.

He swore at the Fulham fans as he was leaving the pitch. 1 match ban, no shock there.

I’d guess that the big difference between Suarez and terry was was the former repeatedly being racist rather than just once. Both terrible stupid things to do but I seem to remember the English press losing their shit about Terry getting away with it so I’m sorry but his argument doesn’t work there either.

Liverpool fans should have some self respect and demand better behaviour from their players. He’s an embarrassment.

  13. dc says:

Not a Liverpool fan, but I think the treatment of him by the press and the governing bodies has been absolutely disgraceful and he should feel aggrieved. The fact that you’re criticizing him based solely on the amount of games he’s been banned is massively narrow minded…

Not arguing that he shouldn’t have been punished– but consider the fact that John Terry was banned half the amount of time for an act (which Suarez noted) that had much more proof of wrongdoing, AND Jermaine Defoe, who bit Mascherano 2 feet in front of the referee, only got a yellow card

8 match ban vs. 4 match ban
10 match ban vs. yellow card

AT SOME POINT, the governing bodies decided that a certain player deserves 18 matches banned in total for basically the same infractions performed by other players that amount to 4 games and a yellow card in total. Even if you factor in reputation and/or prior offenses, that’s EXTRAORDINARILY biased.

    Double standards much?

  14. Koptie says:

I am Livpul fan and I’m sick of him, hate him with a passion.

He brings the good name of our club down and makes us pay for his mistakes, he only qwent and made king keni look like a ediot. We will be better without him, don’t worry lads, next year we win the league and burn Suarez shists, you never your alone!

  15. One Man Went to Mow says:

    @ Jim G

If Suarez is the 3rd best player than why aren’t clubs falling over themselves to get him out of Liverpool, he clearly wants to leave but the likes of Lewendowski, Cavani, Falcao, Rooney, higuian, Bale and even Ronaldo who is going nowhere get more attention.

  16. Al says:

Whether he is guilty of racism or not he still caused the situation and thus pulled the spotlight on himself. He bit Ivanovic again bringing the spotlight on himself. Yes the media went over the top but the simple reality is that the article is 100% correct and Suarez simply wants to leave Liverpool, he should stay to pay the club back for the fact that he has missed so many games through his own making but sadly thats not how football works.

Just say you want to leave and head to Madrid, we’ll be dissapointed but stop patronising us with your pithy excuses. At least Rooney had the dignity to admit his potential move to City was about money

  17. KingB3113 says:

Liverpool fans are so deluded calling Suarez the third best player in the world after Ronaldo and Messi. He’s not even the 3rd best in the prem!
