Manchester City have spent their afternoon showing off their new wares to the press at Carrington, first officially unveiling their new manager Manuel Pellegrini in front of “the Mancini pines”, before turning the Chilean loose and letting him unveil his first signing as City boss – all £34million’s-worth (that fee still sounds ruddy bloody preposterous to us!) of Fernandinho…

Thought Jozy Altidore to Sunderland was news enough to make the cut. Apparently not, too bad was curious to hear pies thoughts.

    • Chris says:

@Nick: Well, put it this way: I’m interested to see, the amount of goals he scored aside, just how much he’s developed as a player in Holland as he looked waaaay out of his depth in the Premier League with Hull in 09/10.

He’ll certainly be sharper and more mature (less blind, headlong charges into the channels) but £6m is a lot of money to pay for a rough-around-the-edges striker who’s fluffed his lines once before – however, it still looks like a bargain next to what Sunderland paid for Connor Wickham.

  2. Shrimper says:

Is that not just Ashley cole and arsene wenger?

  3. Anonymous says:

@Shrimper – ha! that made me giggle

  4. Zam says:

@Shrimper, given Man City’s transfer policies, entirely likely.

  5. Joe says:

Hold the phone, 34 million pounds? For a 28-year-old from a mediocre competition? Football’s just not that much fun anymore when clubs like Chelsea and City (not to mention PSG and Monaco) have cheat codes for unlimited cash. Our only hope is that FFP comes in hard and fast, or that Fernandinho fails as spectacularly as Torres is still doing in London.

On Altidore: He will fail. The standard of defending in Holland is heroically pants (Bournemouth’s Frank Demouge said League One had better defenders), so being a good striker here means nothing.

  6. Anabelle says:

I don’t get it. $34mil and this guy is not even part of the Brazilian team? And how could City scouts miss Paulinho?

    Suckers!

  7. milt_palacio says:

Of course City paid 10 Mil. too much, just as they did with Dzeko, Kolarov and the likes. But this guy is really, really good. Great speed and stamina, his tackling is superb as well. Just watch the games from the CL this year, especially against Chelsea. This guy will thrive in the english up-tempo game (probably).

And it’s no secret that Brazilians playing in Eastern Europe have, for whatever reason, a really bad standing with the nationalteam, see also Willian, Vagner Love and the likes. And the Brazilian talent-pool is still by far the deepest in the world. That he even made five appearances, playing for a “small” club like Shachtjor, is remarkable. Of course you should have got him for less, but if you’re City, do you care?

  8. Nick says:

Joe I think your argument is illogical.
