Who Will Rescue Quincy Owusu-Abeyie?

“Yeah, they’re alright. Do you do them in baby-piss yellow?”

After coming on and turning in a game-changing performance (one goal and two assists) in Portsmouth’s 4-1 win over Southampton yesterday, it seems that Quincy Owusu-Abeyie is trying play his way back into English football on a permanent basis.

The 23 year old winger – formerly of Arsenal, Birmingham and Cardiff - is on loan from Spartak Moscow but is eager to remain in the Premier League after his deal at Pompey expires at the end of the season. He is unhappy with life (and the weather) in Russia and has admitted to Ghanafa.org that he made a mistake leaving England in the first place;

“I didn’t have any doubts about coming to Portsmouth because this is my last chance to show what I can do in English football. My agent at the time advised me to go to Moscow and now I regret it.

I’m only on loan [at Portsmouth] so it’s possible I could have to go back to Moscow at the end of the season, but it is quite difficult for me over there – it’s about minus 20 at the moment.”

If Quincy can put in regular performances like his outing against Southampton, I’m sure he’ll have no problem finding a top-flight suitor.

I remember watching him a few years ago, during his time at Birmingham City, and thinking he had obvious talent that was unfortunately coupled with a shockingly bad attitude. It seems that his ordeal in Russia has humbled him somewhat and, if he can replicate his FA Cup performance against Premier League opponents from now until the end of the season, he could just earn himself the reprieve he so badly desires.

  2. Michael says:

    He was very promising when he was a Gunner. He was so fast that I thought he was faster than Henry himself. And back then Henry was like a superman. Hope that Quincy will become more consistent.

    Saw him come on as a sub against fulham at the cottage. nearly scored a wonder goal after taking it around four or five players, got to be a good shout for someone to bring in on the cheap. Just hope its us.

    Jesus wept, if he keeps Pompey in this fight he deserves a move.
