As announced on their official website just moments ago, Chelsea have completed the signing of Samuel Eto’o from Anzhi Mikeandthemechanics on a one-year contract.

The 32-year-old Cameroonian striker told the club site:

“I am very happy to be here but also anxious because I want to get playing as soon as possible. It wasn’t a hard decision.

“I saw the qualities Chelsea have, and I was very happy with Jose Mourinho before, so when the opportunity came, I was very happy to take it.”

So much for Mourinho’s “it’s Rooney or nobody” guff, eh?

Anyway, what have Chelsea got themselves here? Well, basically they’ve bought a man who has spent the last couple of years mooching around in Russia with the entirely uninterested air of a man who earns £50-a-minute, every minute no matter how little he chooses to contribute to the cause.

That said, we’re sure he may be invigorated by returning to one of Europe’s top leagues so we may be treated to some thrilling cameos, especially against the Premier League’s lesser lights and given the length of his contract, surely burn-out shouldn’t be a problem before he’s released back into the wild in a year’s time.

Any thoughts Chelsea fans/Pies fans in general?

  1. One Man Went to Mow says:

Quietly excited about this. Although saying that last time I saw him he was lifting 3 trophies at Inter after having just done the same the year before at Barca so I’m probably not that up to date on the form of Sammy Eto’o

Is that a plaster on his cheek?

  3. WTF says:

If I were Lukaku I would seriously consider handing in a last minute transfer request now.

  4. wolfinho says:

don’t be shocked when he puts in twenty goals. shrewd business by chelsea (maybe not in dollars, but in return), getting a man whose body is younger than 32 after his vacation in russia, and who will contribute to a competitive team and play hard (well, hard by his standards) for a manager he loves. it’s the exact opposite of the torres transfer. he’s more of a pure striker than rooney anyways, and they have enough playmakers.

  5. JP says:

VERY, VERY curious as to what this mans wages are at CFC?????

  6. TravisKOP says:

@Jp was thinking the same thing.

  7. Davey says:

This is a very shrewd bit of business indeed. Could have spent +£30m on Rooney, or just £20m on Eto’s wages. Its a no brainer.

  8. Jack says:

@JP: He’s making £7m for the season, so roughly £135 per week – a fairly hefty drop from the money bin he was collecting in Russia.

  9. MGJ says:

He may not have the pace he once had, but the man can finish. Let’s just hope for his sake he isn’t another Shevvers!

  10. Si says:

@JP – I would wager a market “top drawer” Premiership striker’s wage, less than what he was on at AM, but with serious bolt-ons in terms of goals scored and club achievements.

Chelski are not in dire need of a striker, despite what the press is spouting, and they should have had the whip hand during negotiations.

  11. Jarren says:

    @Jack: £135 per week?

Is he doing Chelsea’s laundry part time?

Only joking, yeah £135,000 per week is nothing to sniff at.

It’ll be great to see Sammy in the PL.

BTW Chris, I nearly piss myself whenever you mock-up Anzhi’s name.
