Sport Boys, a Bolivian Primera Division club based in Santa Cruz, have pulled off what must be the most high-profile signing in the country’s football history after securing a deal for Evo Morales, the actual incumbent President of Bolivia.

The first division club have confirmed that Morales, 54, has signed a professional player’s deal, agreeing to play for approximately 20 minutes per appearance and receive the country’s minimum professional salary in return – around £127 a year.

Due to his presidential engagements, Sport Boys now plan to send Morales a list of their fixtures for him to ear-mark which ones he is able to turn out for.

“He loves football and plays well,” said Sport Boys’ president Mario Cronenbold. “He’ll wear the No. 10 shirt.”

“We’ll send him a list of matches and he’ll chose which ones to play in.”

Morales is known for his avid love of football and has regularly turned out in friendlies and exhibition games over the years, once breaking his nose in a collision with an opposing goalkeeper during a game in 2006.

We imagine the ‘keeper in question may have been slightly nervous about the consequences of that one!
