Soccer - UEFA Champions League - Quarter Final - First Leg - Paris Saint-Germain v Chelsea - Parc des Princes

We’re not overly sure what to make of this, but The Telegraph are reporting this morning that Chelsea have agreed a deal to sell David Luiz to PSG for a truly astronomical fee of somewhere around the £40million-mark.

Elsewhere, several other papers are also running with the story and are quoting a price-tag closer to £50million. Fifty. Million. Pounds.

This from the Tele:

“Chelsea have agreed to sell David Luiz to Paris St. Germain for a fee which could approach £40million, and may make the shaggy-haired Brazilian the most expensive defender in the world.

“The two clubs are currently in negotiations over the precise fee but the London club are satisfied the offer from PSG will be too valuable to turn down, and have agreed in principle to the sale, which both sides would like to conclude this weekend.”

Apparently the fee has been driven up by the continued presence of Barcelona, who are also hovering with the intent of procuring Luiz themselves.

There is also talk that PSG will return to Chelsea’s car-boot sale stall after the World Cup with hefty bids for Oscar and Eden Hazard too.

Haha this has to be a wind-up, right? £50m for Sideshow? That’d be an impressive bit of business for Chelsea seeing as he’s barely developed as a player (he’s still dodgy as fuck) since he joined them.

  2. Mdot says:

Straight Dave, are you kidding me. Chelsea paid just over 20million pounds + Matic to Benfica, a year and half later they paid Benfica another 20million pounds to get Matic back. So in total he’s cost Chelsea 40million+ pounds. It’ll be impressive if they can break even or get a little extra off him but in terms of great business, that’s something Chelsea has rarely done.

  3. Nuno says:

Probably it’s around 50 million euros, which translates to around 40 million pounds. But someone may have mentioned 50 million and they assumed pounds.
50 million pounds for Luiz is A LOT, even for PSG standards. That’s almost as much as they paid for Cavani (56 M) and much more than Thiago Silva (37 M)!

  4. Murray says:

Weren’t Financial Fair Play regulations already severely curtailing PSG’s spending on the transfer market for the foreseeable future (after already being found GUILTY of breaching FFP)?

Wouldn’t tossing around £40 to £50 million on a center back be absurdly terrible business for PSG, if that were the case?

@Murray I was thinking the same thing but I read that PSG can spend 60m euros plus whatever money they make on selling current players. I love Luiz (though I fully understand that he’s a wild card) but for that amount of money that would be a good deal for Chelsea.

I just hope he disciplines himself when having to defend, or he’ll find his flowing curly locks frazzled by a ZLATAN DEATH STARE (™)
