Dundee United prodigy Ryan Gauld has completed a £2.2million move to Sporting Lisbon this morning, with the Portuguese giants reportedly sticking a whopping €60million release clause into the 18-year-old attacking midfielder’s six-year contract.

Both Dundee United and Sporting have issued short statements this morning to confirm the conclusion of the transfer.

He may have flown under the radar slightly south of the border, but Gauld (nicknamed “‘Mini-Messi” by Dundee United fans) scored eight goals in 38 appearances for the Tangerines last season and is ear-marked to become Scotland’s brightest light.

Best of luck to the lad. It’s always refreshing to see young British talent trying their hand overseas.

Good luck to the lad. I’m sure his game will improve over there.
Interesting to comparison with Tom Ince who apparantley had the chance to go to Inter but looks like choosing Hull instead!

Great place to go for him; Portugese teams seem to do really well at developing young talent from across the world and selling on at a profit. Hope he follows the trend.

awesome to see someone have the bottle to go abroad, hope he settles in and doesn’t get homesick

    Yeah AT, I agree.

You do hope he has the mental strength to deal with this. A big money move is stressful enough, but 18 years of age? Moving to a foreign (language) country? Without your parents, family & friends?

Of course he’ll be well looked after. I just hope he finds a nice Portuguese girl so he can settle in quickly. It’s a beautiful country and he’s a lucky wee boy.
