Famously stating he doesn’t follow football and only plays professionally for the money, it’s fair to say Benoit Assou-Ekotto hasn’t really endeared himself to many people of late.

Indeed, the 30-year-old left-back hasn’t played a single senior game for Tottenham since May of 2013 despite taking home £40,000 a week in wages in return.

Finally, after 18 months of nada, Spurs took the long overdue decision to mulch Assou-Ekotto’s contract yesterday, thus releasing him back into the wild.

He immediately changed his Twitter profile picture to this…

While over on Instagram…

We think he might be trying to tell us something.

Oh well, at least now he can get back to doing what he really loves…

LOL. He had his chance with QPR but if you end up looking crap for one of the crappiest teams in the league then your future options will be limited. Him and Adebore are a fine pair. Unfortunately we’ve still got one of the parasites hanging on.

I love Benoit, he’s the most refreshingly honest footballer I can think of. I find it hard to believe him admitting he doesn’t follow football doesn’t endear him to anyone – the vast vast vast majority of people only do what they do because of the money. I challenge anyone to turn down essentially 2 years off for £40,000 a week.

Freedom???? Free from earning 40k a week to not work??
    What a self indulgent tool.

I don’t think anyone that does a job who’s rewards rely so heavily on our collective ability to dismiss the rational (that your team is crap and going through the motions of a sporting institution only to serve a money-making machine) for the fantasy (but watch us go next season!) should admit publicly that he is part of the cold rational rather than the fantasy.
It’s not cool, it’s disrespectful to everything & everybody that cares about the game, and what it once represented.
You, and the majority of fans now attending only for something to do in between all of the other bullsh!t forms of ‘entertainment’ to distract the simple mind, are the reason proper fans cannot relate to their environment any more.

    Joe,

It’s a ridiculous notion to dismiss someone as disrespectful for not indulging ignorant fans in the idea their team is anything but ‘a fantasy’, that’s their own fault. I’m a waiter but I have to give bullshit recommendations of the food despite actually finding most of it pretty grotesque, I hate doing it and I commend Benoit for telling it how it is. The man has merely taken advantage of a ludicrous system where only semi-talented players (and he probably knows it) are earning in a week more than most their supporters do in a year.

And don’t accuse me of not being a proper fan – I support Walsall, what a glory hunter eh?
