As the 2014/15 seasons nears its finale, a fertile summer of wild transfer speculation and silly rumours are just around the corner. So we at Pies have decided to give our Transfer Balls a good old airing (grow up).

First up is the story from the Daily Mail that Arsenal are on the cup of nabbing (yet another) ‘new Messi’, 16-year old Velez Sarsfeld wunderkind Maxi Romero, for the rather cheap sum of £4.6million.

The teenage whizzkid has yet to make his first team debut for the Argentinian giants, but he’s apparently highly thought of down South America way.

The Mail even have actual quotes relating to the potential deal, with Raul Gamez, the Velez president saying:

“Arsenal have made a big offer for Maxi Romero. I don’t want to talk figures just yet but it’s a big offer.”

The youngster’s agent Rolando Zarate, unsurprisingly, is also quoted:

“I met with Arsene Wenger twice in London. They heard about Maxi through their scouts in South America. He is the player who has most impressed him. “

However, if all these reports are to be believed, the plan would be for Arsenal to allow the player to stay in Argentina for a couple of seasons, until he hits 18 in 2017, before shipping him over to north London. Zarate explained:

“Maxi has huge potential but he is going to complete apprenticeship at a great club like Velez.”

According to the Mirror, “Romero has yet to make his first-team bow for Velez, but has scored twice in friendlies and regularly trains with the senior squad”.  So there.

Here’s a news report on the potetnial move for Argentinian TV, which shows some of Romero’s goals – though he looks a lot taller than Leo Messi to me!

This one does seems plausible. Although Romero would obviously one for the future, when Arsene Wenger probably won’t even be at Arsenal anymore.
