The Metro report that Mexican international defender Hector Moreno is on his way to Arsenal with the Gunners apparently readying a £14.3million deal.

The story comes via a piece in Spanish outlet sport.es which claims the wiry 27-year-old centre-half is set to choose the Gunners over their north London rivals Tottenham this summer.

Moreno was Espanyol’s Player of the Year in 2011/12 while he appeared in the 2014 World Cup in Mexico. Alas, in the game against the Netherlands, he broke his leg which curtailed his involvement in Espanyol’s 2014/15 campaign up until  December.

With Per Mertesacker getting older (and even slower), Calum Chambers not yet the finished article and Gabriel still finding his feet, the Gunners’ central defensive stable could do with a new face and Moreno could well be just that. And the modest price tag has ‘Arsene Wenger purchase’ written all over it.

Smart business if Arsenal can pull it off, wouldn’t you agree?

Please give up on these Transfer Balls articles and get Pies back to what it used to be and what it does best rather than just a gossip column.

Regarding the article, surely he would be in exactly the same position as Gabriel, making it pointless? Not gonna happen
