Has Martin O’Neill Quit Aston Villa? (Club Denies It)

By Ollie Irish

Sensational rumour alert! The Mirror reports that Martin O’Neill has resigned as Aston Villa manager. The tabloid claims that O’Neill had a disagreement with owner Randy Lerner, which prompted the Ulsterman to walk away from Villa Park.

It’s still too early to judge how much truth there is in this rumour, but in the wake of Villa’s 7-1 hammering at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, I wouldn’t be surprised if O’Neill was a tad disillusioned right now – there are also reports that Lerner is keen to cut Villa’s squad/wage bill this summer.

Big Stan Collymore has just Tweeted up: ‘Martin is 100% not going anywhere. Trust me’

I’m inclined to agree with Stan – O’Neill is building a team at Villa and would he walk away just before an FA Cup semi final? I can’t see it, but madder things have happened in football, like Elijah ‘Frodo’ Wood being cast as a hooligan in ‘Green Street’.

More news as soon as it breaks, folks…

UPDATE: Villa have denied it. Looks like a false alarm.
