Damien Duff and his signature ‘been chasing chickens around the farmyard all morning’ look

Nothing has been finalised quite yet but it’s being reported that Damien Duff is on the brink of signing for his hometown side Shamrock Rovers, based in Dublin.

Having enjoyed largely successful stints at Blackburn, Chelsea, Newcastle, Fulham and most recently, A-League club Melbourne City over the course of his career, Duff, now 36, left Australia in March with the intention of finishing his playing days back home in the League of Ireland.

It would appear that Duff is in the latter stages of hammering out a deal with Shamrock Rovers, though it’s understood that the contract is taking a while to be finalised due to an unusual clause being demanded by the player himself.

However, rather than anything indulgent or spoilt-brattish like, say, unlimited helicopter rides and a private beach, Duff and his representatives are currently working on a deal with Rovers that will see all of the former Republic of Ireland international’s wages go directly to a charity of Duff’s choosing.

The precise charity set to benefit is unknown, but Duff is an ambassador for Heart Children Ireland, so that’s not a bad guess for starters.

All in all, it’s lovely stuff from Duff – though he’ll probably end up getting barracked for donating large sums of money to a children’s charity just as David Beckham was when he attempted the very same thing a few years ago because, as we know, some Grinches out there will quite literally moan about anything.
