Exciting times. Crystal Palace have confirmed that Andros Townsend has joined the club from Newcastle in a £13million deal.

At the very same time, Newcastle have confirmed that Dwight Gayle has joined them from Crystal Palace in a deal worth around £10million.

Townsend, who only signed for Newcastle at the end of January, has signed a five-year contract at Palace, while Gayle has signed a five-year deal at St James’ Park.

Hell’s bells. What a whirlwind. Anyway, it’s tough to argue that this is the right move for both players; Townsend obviously desperate to keep playing in the Premier League and Gayle desperate to establish himself as a leading man albeit at a slightly lower level.

It all makes sense, and that’s about all we can really say.

Am I alone in thinking that the former is somewhat overrated and the latter is rather underrated? Any road, good luck to Palace and to Gayle.

I always think Gayle looks like a cracking player and has been shockingly under-utilised at Palace. I like Townsend too however. I think both are good signings for their prospective new clubs.

Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie (also signed for the Toon today) are exactly the kind of signings Newcastle need. Proven Championship level quality but good enough to step up if/when they are promoted.
