Charlton midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who turned down a move to Chelsea last season, is to sign for Liverpool after the two teams agreed a fee for a transfer. The deal is subject to a medical, but Shelvey is a fit young lad and I can’t see any problems there.

The Addicks confirmed on their official website that the clubs had agreed an initial fee of £1.7m for Shelvey, who travelled to Merseyside yesterday for talks and a medical. The remainder of the fee (rising to £3m) is subject to appearances and performance-related targets at domestic and international level.

The Charlton statement said: “As part of the potential transfer, the two clubs are also in talks to develop a strategic partnership involving the development of players in both directions.”

The results of the medical will be known later today.

I’ve not seen much of Shelvey, who made his first-team debut for Charlton at just 16 (he’s 18 now), but I know Charlton fans rate him highly and will be gutted to see him leave so cheaply. At least the Addicks should see some Liverpool talent come the other way on loan.
