Harry Redknapp Handed £40m Champions League Kitty?

By Chris Wright

Word is that Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is set to be handed a £40 million transfer kitty to pad out his squad, after securing qualification for next season’s Champions League.

Spurs already have a strong squad – just look at their bench for the Man City game – but they could probably do with adding just a little more quality to their ranks if they are to compete, rather than just feature, in Europe next term.

So where do you think ‘Arry’s money should go? These would be my hypothetical signings (and the price I’d be willing to pay), assuming all player’s are fit and willing to sign of course!

Goalkeeper: David James (Portsmouth / Free)

Defenders: Micah Richards (Man City / £7m), Royston Drenthe (Real Madrid / £5m)

Midfielders: Joe Cole (Chelsea / Free), Lassana Diarra (Real Madrid / £9m)

Forwards: Craig Bellamy (Man City / £12m)

Total: £33m (The change would have to go towards Cole’s wages!)

Righto, that’s my effort – now let’s hear your suggestions peeps…

We have Palacios and Sandro as defensive midfielders, not sure why we’d be after Diarra – or why he’d come. Seems a lazy Portsmouth link to me
Bellamy obviously based on the wink after the City game, James snore, Joe Cole – oh right, yeah, coz he played for Harry, obviously he’ll come – despite that much better clubs than Spurs will be after him…

Actually, this is just a really lazy article.

They have a lot of dead wood to get rid of that I asssume could double that transfer kitty.

GoalKeeper – Foster (Utd/£4m) – Good backup to Gomes
    Defenders – Mamadou Sakho (PSG/£10m), Maicon (Inter/£20m)
Midfielders – Joe Cole (free), Hleb (Barce/£6m)
Forwards – Gueseppi Rossi (Villarreal/£8m) to replace Keane

I think most of the squad is capable of playing at that level.

  3. Chris says:

@Dufus: Oops! Forgot about Sandro. I just happen to think Lass is a quality midfielder who is out of favour at his current club.

James will want to stay in the Prem and would provide, at the very least, top notch cover for Gomes (maybe even displace him).

Cole is being linked with a move and would be a great signing for any team – especially on a Bosman.

Bellamy was included because he is apparently desperate to leave City, plus his industry would add something to the Spurs frontline.

Some of my choices may be based on ‘old’ rumours but that doesn’t mean they don’t make sense.

As a spurs supporter i would say the squad is solid at the moment, but needs a couple of class players if they are to fight for the 4-spoth next season. My wishlist contains a quality striker and Steven Pienaar.
Maybe a replacement for Jenas, who seems to be departing.

  5. leandro says:

    Why James?
    Gomes is enough.

  6. Chris says:

@leandro: Because he’s a good goalkeeper available on the cheap, and Spurs’ current second-choice ‘keeper has two broken wrists and a fractured pelvis.

  7. mizman says:

Good potential list imho. However, wouldn’t buy Drenthe or Bellamy.

Drenthe – simply not sure about him, decent player with potential, just neeed to see more of him to be sure.

Craig Bellamy – Spurs won the city game due to their Cohesiveness and team ethic. They have an inner strength beacuse the players trust each other. buying Craig bellamy would jeopardize that, he has been disruptive influence wherever he has been. Spurs need to continue with players of unselfish mind-set. plus aaron lennon is better.

    Buy: As above plus:

    Mahamdou Niang (marseille 10m?)

    Andre Santos – (Fenerbache £8m?)

    Mahamadou Sakho – (PSG 10m?)

  8. Jon says:

    GK: Kasper Schmeichel (free)
Def: Micah Richards (8m) Marcelo (8m)
Mid: Moussa Sissoko (15m) or Anderson (12m)
    For: Jefferson Farfan (9m)

Get rid of Jenas, Bentley, Keane, Pavlyuchenko, Hutton, O’hara, Assou-Ekotto and Woodgate.
Also listen to offers for Palacios, Huddlestone, and Defoe.

  9. Gooner365 says:

haha… First get to the group stages then decide who to buy… Yids getting over excited, then get knocked out by Lyon in the qualifying lol :P

  10. JP says:

‘Get rid of Jenas, Bentley, Keane, Pavlyuchenko, Hutton, O’hara, Assou-Ekotto and Woodgate.
Also listen to offers for Palacios, Huddlestone, and Defoe.’

    What a stupid comment!
    Sell half the squad! insanity!
huddlestone, BAE, Woodgate, Bently are fanatastic players we shouldn’t even consider selling.
The others – well many would be useful – CL football is a squad game. this isn’t football manager you moron. but keane and jenas are crap agreed, hutton and o’hara probs out too.
The idiots claiming james is better than gomes clearly don’t go games or even have sky-sports. I’m amazed at the idiocy of comments on here.

    with 40m:

one big signing edin dzeko- 32m . he is the sort of world-class player we need to take this club up a level.

a reserve keeper eg kasper schiemcal on the cheap. and maybe 1 or 2 exciting young prospects

(cole and bellamy: i don’t see them in first team. better than modric, bale, lennon? no. bale and lennon are better wingers, faster, more skilfull and better crossers. modric is far superior playmaker + we have krancjar and bently, both nice attacking midfield passers as other options. )

  11. The Main Man U Fan says:

I am a man u fan but I think spurs should sign

    Edin Dzeko £30 million
    Edin Hazard £20 million
    Neven Subotic £20 million
    Joe Hart £10 million
    Sell
    Keane £10 million
    Ekotto £6 million
    Hutton £6 million
    O’hara £5 million
    Jenas £5 million
    Naughton £3 million
    Woodgate £5 million

    £40 million spent
