Cristiano Ronaldo’s €100million transfer to Juventus might be sitting very nicely with fans of the Bianconeri, but not everyone in Italy has been left elated by the news.

According to Football Italia, Fiat workers at the car manufacturer’s Melfi plant in southern Italy are set to go on strike over the vast amounts of money involved in facilitating Ronaldo’s move to Juve.

It’s all down to the fact some of the fee is being paid by Exor, who owns both Fiat and Ferrari and are reportedly shovelling much-needed funds into the deal.

The Italian trade body Unione Sindacale di Base have branded the plans as “unacceptable” while workers “continue to make huge economic sacrifices”.

A statement from the trade union reads:

We’re told that times are tough, that we need to resort to social safety nets, waiting for the launch of new models, which never arrive.

And while the workers and their families tighten their belts more and more, the company decides to invest a lot of money on a single human resource!

Is this fair? It is normal for one person to earn millions, while thousands of families can’t even get to the middle of the month?

We’re all employees of the same owner, but this difference in treatment cannot and must not be accepted.

The Fiat workers have made the company’s fortune for at least three generations, but in return they have only ever received a life of misery.

The company should invest in car models that guarantee the futures of thousands of people, rather than enriching only one.

That should be the objective, a company that puts the interests of their employees first.

If it isn’t, it’s because they prefer the world of football, entertainment and everything else.

The strike is set to take place between 10pm on Sunday 15th July and 6pm on Tuesday 17th July – which, coincidentally, is ideal for anyone planning on bunking off for the World Cup final.

Let’s just hope Juventus don’t decide to disclose Ronaldo’s salary.

That might result in a factory full of burnt-out cinquecentos.

Sound a bit like Rover employees. Communist demands.

Hey, labor is entitled to the wealth it produces. And running around on the grass for 90 minutes a week is does NOT constitute laboring….

So, I say, go for it, Fiat workers!
