Tottenham have quashed rumours circulating on social media that their new stadium is to be named “The Nike Stadium” as part of a rights deal.

It all began with a video tweeted (and subsequently deleted) by the BeIN Sports account that saw Richard Keys “exclusively reveal” the name of Spurs’ new 62,000-seater arena.

Speaking in the video, Keys waffles (quotes via Metro):

Big day in north London, breaking from that part of the world there is a UEFA inspection going on at new White Hart Lane to see if it can host a Champions League quarter-final the week of April 8th.

I believe I’m right in saying the first league game will be played on April 6th, Brighton the opposition, and that stadium, I can exclusively reveal, will be called the Nike Stadium.

However, as with a high percentage of the stagnant miasma that leaves Keys’ mouth, it would appear that his info was exclusive for a good reason: it’s not true.

The Daily Mail have quickly denounced the ‘Nike Stadium’ revelation after learning from their Spurs sources that the claim is “not correct”.

Indeed, the rumour parroted by Keys is not a new one and has been doing the rounds for the best of a year after fans tried to read into the clues supposedly hidden in the official branding released by the club.

As things stand, the arena is still due to open despite the original plan being to have it operational and hosting matches by the early knockings of the 2018/19 season.

Till they get that frigging ribbon cut, it doesn’t really matter what it’s called.
