Mark Hughes wanted to sign Roque Santa Cruz and now he has his man, signed for a relatively modest £3.5m from Bayern Munich – it’s a good move for the popular Paraguayan striker, who would probably have spent much of this season at Bayern sat on his ass, watching the likes of Luca Toni, Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose score goals in the Bundesliga.
Santa Cruz seems to have been around for ages, but he’s only 25 and a proven international. He’s tall, skillful and should complement Benni McCarthy well. Here’s a video of him being unveiled at a sunny Ewood Park:

You forgot to add “goal-shy” to his list of adjectives.

I think he may prove to be a good signing if he can deal with the physical nature of the prem. He does seem a bit fragile. A good talent though and for 3.5 a bargain as well.

Sky Sports News made me laugh when they were raving about his stats the other day, something like 10 goals in 90 matches. I think he’ll get 7 or 8 next season but he’ll get roughed out of most games. But then again what’s 3.5 mil in todays game?

I agree, think he may got knocked around. Not hundred percent sure why we’ve signed him, specially since Derbyshire is eager to prove himself and Rigters looks pretty good… Cover for Macarthy if he moves on?

I think this is a good signing for Rovers. I beleive Mark Hughes is an intelligent man, and a stern one at that, he will make sure that Santa Cruz works hard, if that’s not good enough, I think the investment on Rover’s behalf is modest enough to only make a slight loss if not break even.
I think Santa Cruz has enough flair and speed to be successful, I just think it’s the adjustment that needs to be made. A good investment on Hughes part I think.
