Wolfsburg today completed the signing of highly rated Denmark defender Simon Kjaer. He arrives from Palermo on a four-year contract, for an undisclosed fee. What an excellent signing for the Wolves.

Managing director Dieter Hoeness told Wolfsburg’s official website: “Simon is not only a strong, aggressive defender, he also has a good personality on the field.

“He has the qualities of a leader… We are happy that it has all come together now and that he has chosen us.”

“The transfer means I have the chance to play for a top club,” Kjaer said.

“I think this is the right step for me. We have a strong team that can challenge at the top of the Bundesliga. First, I need to secure a regular place.”

This is a real transfer coup for Steve McClaren’s new club, not that it’s clear if McClaren had anything to do with it – several big Premier League clubs were reportedly interested in Kjaer, and I’m sure some observers will be surprised that the Dane has chosen a move to Germany instead of England. Perhaps this is another sign that the Prem’s appeal is on the wane?
