Liverpool have confirmed, via their official website, that free-agent Joe Cole has signed for the club on a four-year deal following his release from Chelsea.

The England winger’s move to Anfield is now only subject to a routine medical that will be undertaken either later today or first thing tomorrow morning.

A short statement was issued by Liverpool to confirm the news;

“Liverpool  FC are delighted to confirm the signing of Joe Cole on a four-year deal.

The England midfielder has agreed personal terms with the Reds and will undergo a medical in the next 48 hours.”

Whereas it’s fairly short-sighted to suggest that the acquisition of Joe Cole alone will be able to instigate an up-turn in fortunes for Liverpool (Sky Sports News, Phil Thompson etc…), it’s a pretty good start – especially for the fee involved.

However, Cole is injury prone and has made under 30 starts in the last two Premier League seasons combined, so (with his wages taken into account) it could turn out to be a very expensive gamble on Liverpool’s behalf.

Feel free to share your first impressions…

    I’m happy with this. I’m not quite at the hysterical Sky Sports News level of euphoria like, but this is a good signing.

  2. Pete says:

    brilliant news! quality player. will fit in well, I think

  3. Delboy Dublin says:

    2 years younger than Benayoun, fulfills the “homegrown player” stipulation, one of the most naturally skillful players in the league, good business all round. The only question mark is over his injury record, tends to only get “big” injuries which rule him out for months.

  4. Josh Arsenal Fan says:

    It’s never going to be an ‘expensive gamble’ as he was a free transfer and quality that Joe Cole posesses can cost considerable amounts, so his wages over the 4 years will compare nothing to that of what Liverpool have gained from the transfer fee standing at a remarkable 0.
    I would love to have saw Joe Cole prance across London into the Arsenal camp, but i believe in Wenger and if Joe Cole was really that good, Wenger would have made sure he was in the colours on the Gunners next season but evidently not.

  5. Ping Yang says:

    I don’t see this. I am a little disappointed that Cole did not move abroad. When we released him I was upset but thinking about it, it was the correct decision. He was never the player he was before. The injuries really did a number on him. Under Mourinho he was a footballing genius. Every time he was on the ball I always expected big and he delivered. This season when he finally returned, I expected so much and received so little. I gave up on him. He used to take defenders on with such confidence and now each time he receives the ball, he passes it back. Injuries really do have a number on you. He has the fallen confidence of Ronaldinho and is as injury prone as Michael Owen and soon Owen Hargreaves. Good Luck Joe Cole, I hate Liverpool but for your ability and sake, please regain the form that made you a Chelsea legend!!!

    Great news! just what Liverpool needs. Two players on a free transfer – good work! just hope he stays injury free.

  7. Bruce says:

    Hope he does well – fingers crossed he is more useful than Harry Kewell who came in the same circumstances.

  8. spectator says:

    yep, sell benayoung and get someone younger, and probably better for nothing. good bit of business.

  10. Mathers says:

    I used to like Joe Cole. Poor choice of club. He needs to go to a club thats going somewhere. Spurs or Villa would have been great. Everton would have been better than Liverpool.

  11. Deckard says:

    Jole Cole is vastly over-rated. For years he seemed England’s most skillful player because the typical English player can’t even dribble past a lamp post. Hodgson is a piece of shit if he drops Kuyt – who had an outstanding WC – in favour of Cole who’s just an over-paid waste of space. If he sits 90% of the season on the bench at one top side, what the hell would be different at another.

  13. Ryan Kam says:

    @Mathers

    You mean the Everton who hasn’t placed above Liverpool in the table in modern football Everton? Yeah. That’d be a good decision. You don’t sound bitter or anything.

  14. sue peace says:

    As a lifelong liverpool supporter havent had much to cheer about for a while, but all of a sudden i feel quietly optimistic! one bad season is all it was -hope spurs make the most of their time in the Champions League coz it aint gonna last! Bring on the new season YNWA.

  15. Mathers says:

    @ryan

    Im certainly not bitter, i couldnt care less about either club, but if i was in his position i would go to a club with ambition and drive with decent fans behind them. Like Everton or Tottenham a club thats going places.

    fuck off mathers and deckard you pair of cunts!
    come on ryan lad!
