Just before close of play last night, Ajax issued a statement confirming that they and coach Martin Jol had parted company ‘by mutual consent’.

Jol (who only joined the club last May) then issuing the following personal statement via ajax.nl, claiming that he felt he could no longer work for a club with such crippling expectations:

“With pain in my heart I say goodbye to this wonderful club. We started something last summer that I would have finished. But I have come to realise that the expectations after last season were too high. We cannot meet such expectations.”

Unsurprisingly, Jol is now the heavy (pun shamefully intended) favourite to take over at the Newcastle, after the club’s risible owners took the shameful decision of sacking Chris Hughton yesterday – with a few reports this morning suggesting that he could be officially sworn in before the Magpies’ game with Liverpool on Saturday.

Co-incidence?

…Is it balls. Big Fat Mike’s had this one lined up for weeks.

Will be extremley intresting regarding transfers. I believe Hugton had little to do with the signings of Cheik Toite, Ben Arfa and Gosling. Newcastle, in the post Shepard era, have tended to opt for the more contental way of purchasing players, signing them on behalf of the Manager (hence why Keegan Left.)And If i can remember correctly, didn’t Martin Jol leave Tottenham because of the signings Damien Comolli made on his behalf? (As well as a string of bad results.)

  2. […] it looks like big Dutch fella Martin Jol is on his way to St James’. This is a good thing. I could listen to Jol talk Dutch all day […]

Mike Ashley is a SPURS fan.

as a nufc fan, I would actually be quite happy with Jol replacing Hughton (but still pissed with Mike Ashley for sacking hughton in first place)

I feel sorry for the players, and hope that the new manager doesnt come in and drop the regulars who deserve their place i.e. Enrique + Tiote but at the same time I hope he drops the trash i.e. Shola and Guthrie

He’ll be sorely missed. Jol had us playing excellent football for most of last season, but even then the Ajax oracles (Cruyff mainly) had to sling mud. Cruyff either needs to take the job himself or stop bitching, as he is seriously harming ‘his’ club.

Buying expensive players he didn’t need, continually changing the line-up, signing over-the-hill players and playing them over young talent.

Jol made a mess of it at Ajax and always, even in his last statement, blaming everything on others.

But, gutted to see him leave!

  7. Trolololol says:

Really, Dennis? I think he did a lot better in that respect that Van Basten or Ten Cate (who bought the likes of Jurgen Colin, Kennedy, Cvitanich and Luque). Jol put Anita, Alderweireld and Siem de Jong in the first team, the only ‘over the hill’ player he signed was Atouba.

  8. dennis says:

Better perhaps, but not good. Anita, Alderweireld and De Jong are dismal this year as are the rest of the team, Stekelenburg, Hamdaoui and Verthongen excluded.
And may if remind you of Ooijer, Tainio and Mido.
