La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that a delegation from Liverpool has arrived in Rome this morning to offer around €16m for the services of Alberto Aquilani. The highly rated Italian playmaker is a potential replacement for Xabi Alonso, who seems intent on a switch to Real Madrid.

From what I’ve seen of Aquilani, he’s a very talented player. He’s more offensive than Xabi, but his passing range is not as great as the Spaniard’s (he makes up for that with his terrific long-range shooting) – he would be a very interesting leftfield signing by Rafa. I really can’t see it happening though.
