A lot of comparisons are being drawn between Graham Taylor’s time in charge of England and Steve McClaren’s. Taylor’s stint was considerably longer but failure to qualify for major tournaments put paid to both. This often hilarious and frequently cringe-worthy video shows Taylor throughout England’s defeat against Holland in 1993, which all but ended his England career. Check out the Pauls (Ince and Merson) during his press conference and see if you think he has the backing off the squad!

With the benefit of hindsight, and as much as I slagged him off at the time, Taylor wasn’t a terrible manager. He played long-ball football, yes, but he knew what he was doing, more so than Steve McClaren I’d say. He looked and sounded a bit comical, and that didn’t help his public image.
Plus, watching that vid, he didn’t have much luck in Holland, did he? Koeman should have been sent off but the ref bottled it – not Turnip’s fault.

  2. Gav says:

At least he seemed to be somewhat passionate about the game and about England winning. Mclaren was nothing more than a talentless version of Sven.

    Fuckin stone wall peano…
Fair played to him for saying the ref got him the sack..it wasnt the other results

    ‘PLATTY!’
At least Taylor got knocked out by an unfortunate result in the lion’s den, which goes to show that McClaren must be even less intelligent or charismatic.
