Ahead of this weekend’s FA Cup games, we thought it only right to bring you just a teeny weeny taste of the ‘Magic of the Cup™’ courtesy of one Wayne Hatswell, a name that will live long in the memory (possibly) – a man who, in one moment of pure unadulterated technical incompetence, smashed home arguably the worst own-goal ever.
Playing for Forest Green against Morecambe in the FA Cup back in November 2000, Hatswell’s abject failure to clear the ball ended in the world possible way – with the ball rocketing into his own net. The visitors Morecambe went on to win the game 3-0.
To be fair to the defender (now 36 years old), his overall form with Forest Green did eventually earn him a move to Oxford United, while he also had stints at Chester City, Kidderminster Harriers, Rushden & Diamonds and Cambridge United. He is currently a player coach at Newport County, in case you were wondering.
The magic (or should that be tragic?) of the cup, indeed…
