The Championship Table: Minute By Minute (Video)

The Championship table, as it would look on 16th March 2012, had every game finished in every consecutive minute, i.e, had full-time been signalled and the result logged after the first minute, the second minute, the third minute, etc, etc.

It’s a work of stat-o-riffic genius, though you’ll need to go ‘full screen’ with this one unless you have eyesight like a Barn Owl and Liono combined…

This intriguing chart is the brainchild of one Ben Mayhew, a football league-centric blogger (you can follow him on Twitter @experimental361) who can explain his table better than we ever could:

“If every game had finished on 85 minutes, would your team be sitting higher in the table having not conceded all those last-minute equalisers and winners?”

“You’ll notice that I’ve split out home and away records so that you can see where each team’s goals are going in, and also that I haven’t taken Portsmouth’s points deduction into account (given that it isn’t a reflection of their on-field performance).

“I’m aware that I could have done a better job of the video, so just in case it looks horrible I have prepared a backup plan. The following graphic shows how the table would look after each five-minute interval.”

That graphic is available here, so you and all your friends can clearly monitor Forest’s valiant demise (highest league position: 16th of 24, in the second week) over the course of the campaign. ‘Tis a glorious failure.

Ben’s table originally appeared over at ShortList. We’ve also been reliably informed by the man himself that’s he’s looking at producing tables for other divisions in the near future, so we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled.

Somebody needs to go outside more.

Wow, 89 Minute compared to the 90th:

    West Ham totally failed!

So, what I’ve learned today is that my team, Boro, are an average mid-table club. In the first half. But essentially Top 4 material in the second.

Hmm. We also haven’t scored in the first 10 minutes. Sort it out!
