Ruben Negredo (older brother of Sevilla’s Alvaro) had a busy old afternoon at work in the Spanish third tier last week, putting in a double-shift for Gimnastica de Torrelavega in their Segunda Division B league tie with Burgos.

At one-nil down, having started the game in his favoured position up top, Negredo bought Gimnastica back level with an equaliser on the hour mark, only to find himself press-ganged into service as an auxiliary goalkeeper 15 minutes later when first-choice stopper Ivan Crespo was dismissed for tripping a Burgos player in the area.

Negredo’s first duty after donning Crespo’s newly-vacated gloves was to face the subsequent penalty (2:00 for the goal, 2:55 for the spot-kick)…

After successfully holding the fort for the remaining quarter-of-an-hour to keep the score at 1-1, Gimnastica’s new first-choice ‘keeper Negredo told the press:

“I was lucky to stop the penalty! That was the first time I’ve ever worn the gloves in a match. I’ve never seen a situation like that.”

What a hero.

Mistakes galore, yes. Not so sure about the skills, though – hard to believe that this is the third tier of Spanish football, and not the thirtieth tier.
