With Italy having just gone 4-0 down and running on fumes, Spain captain Iker Casillas took it upon himself to plead with the officials to put them out of their misery (in much the same way you’d feel morally obliged to go back and finish off a deer you’d hit on the road with your car jack), yelling at the assistant: “Respect for the rival. Respect for Italy. It’s 4-0, yes?”, only for the final whistle to sound almost immediately…

“Call it. We are done here.”

Truth be told, they could’ve probably ended it all at half-time.

Also, as soon as the whistle blew and all the Spain players were jumping all over each other Cassillas was walking around shaking hands with every single Italian player. Class.

@Chris – exactly, that’s the kind of guy you want as your captain: does the business on the pitch and seemed to have genuine respect for the opponent. Top class

Buffon on the other showed a complete lack of spirit and diehardness throughout the game; when your own captain doesn’t want to fight back how do other players? Lost so much respect for him because of this match.
