The man idolised and aped by Zinedine Zidane, Uruguayan legend Enzo Francescoli (Zizou even named his first-born son after him!), took to the field for Ariel Ortega’s testimonial at River Plate over the weekend – coming away with a four-goal haul, including an audacious overhead kick which, at the age of 50, is risky whichever way you look at it…

Gah. The man’s got the best part of a quarter-century on yours truly and he’s still attempting acrobatics that would put me in hospital for a week.

While we’re here, what say we have a little glimpse into why Zidane regards Francescoli so highly…

Mmm. Creamy Uruguayan goodness.

Quality player Francescoli was. Shame his team-mates were mostly thugs in the 86 World Cup.
I remember him scoring a overhead kick goal for River Plate in 85 or 86 where the ball came down on the corner of the penalty area, he chested it and scissor kicked into the opposite corner.
They showed it on football focus, but I’ve never seen it since !

He’ll do a better job than David McGoldrick. Sign him up Mick!

Don’t be an ageist, fifty isn’t that old. If he’s stayed in shape why not. It’s not like he’s a seventy or eighty year old man performing these moves. At around seventy you already start to lose bone density naturally.
