The US Women’s side snaffled themselves a place in the Olympic final after eventually coming out on top in a rip-snorting semi-final against Canada at Old Trafford in which they fell behind on no less than three occasions.

Canada’s focal point, striker Christine Sinclair scored a hat-trick on the evening, but two goals from Megan Rapinoe (including one directly from a corner) and an Abby Wambach penalty hauled the US level at the 90-minute mark – before Alex Morgan nodded home in the 122nd minute of the game to spirit her side into the final and set up a grudge match against the Japanese womens’ side that thwarted the Yankettes’ World Cup dreams but a year ago.

Yes please don’t mention the horrendous officiating by the Amer.. I mean Norwegian ref

  2. Michael_D says:

@Jeff – there there, the ref was just as woeful as the defending from both teams. For us, we apparently don’t know how to defend a strong, tall forward like Sinclair because she was basically scoring at will. Likewise, the Canadians didn’t know how to defend corners or basically anything inside the box. The US will need to be far more tight defensively against Japan, but it was a very, very entertaining match. Shame that somebody had to go home after that one

if you haven’t seen this game, do yourself a favour and watch it. it was absolutely terrific. plus, you get a chance to see some of the most horrendous officiating i’ve ever seen!

looks like someone over at the IOC wanted a japan/US rematch.

  4. Hirsty says:

Poor defending or not there is no denying the refereeing was absolutely atrocious and that Canada were well and truly robbed.

  5. Abe Froman says:

For all the times we’ve seen an egregious handball not get called, to see one go the other way, no worse.

  6. Zam says:

There were bad calls to Canadia’s advantage too, that free kick with the ball open in the box for no reason whatsoever, for one.

There is something about the US team that make me dislike them a lot. maybe It’s Hope Solo’s Wombat’s and Rapinoe’s sheer arrogance?

Good to see Canada going far in the Olympics tho

  8. Bear says:

Now, there’s no reason to bicker and argue. At least we all can agree that Canada’s Kaylyn Kyle just might be more striking (pun) than Alex Morgan.

    Just search her. You’ll see.

  9. Adam says:

Biased ref’s… oh please. Enforcing the rules isn’t being biased. Especially when you have a keeper that is blatantly breaking the rules constantly. There were times where she was holding the ball for 15+ seconds. You can whine all you want about bias but rules are rules and McLeod is too good of a keeper playing at too high of a level to not know the rules. Also if you want to claim that the ref was biased in favor of the US, you clearly never looked in Tancredi’s direction. That girl has been the definition of dirty thug this entire olympics. She should have gotten booted from the US game and the fact that she only kept getting fouls called instead of cards shows that the ref was not US biased.

I want to put my head up Alex Morgan’s shirt post-match and rub my face all over her sweat-drenched AAs
