Real Madrid are in Philadelphia at the moment, gearing up for a pre-season game against Celtic at the Lincoln Financial Field tonight (the game is being shown on ITV4 for anyone who’s interested).

In preparation, Jose Mourinho’s motley crew have been limbering up at the Philly Eagles’ training HQ and, as such, were guests of honour at their friendly against the Pittsburgh Steelers on the Thursday evening – a game which saw Sergio Ramos provide the half-time entertainment by hoofing home an impressive 53-yard field goal (the current NFL record is apparently only ten yards further) to the amazement of the American commentators…

Gi’ it some welly Sergio lad!

Question for the Americans over here on Pies…what do American Football fans think about these Real Madrid players? Are they interested or don’t they give a damn?

  2. Chris B. says:

Most of them don’t care at all, but enough do.

“Real Madrid? What, the other teams are fake?”

The game has reached a level of popularity such that people who only follow American sports have at least heard of big clubs like Man U, Real, Barca, etc., but the only players they know are Ronaldo and Messi.

This was not the case even ten years ago. I think the 2002 World Cup was the turning point – bar owners were shocked to see people showing up to watch the games at 3:00am. Now MLS games are actually mentioned on TV!

BTW, Ramos got good distance, but it wasn’t high enough. In a game, that kick gets blocked.

  3. Graham says:

When you ask diehard American football fans about soccer teams, you usually have the following responses:

    “Gay”
    “You’re gay”
    “That’s gay”
“That’s what my kid(s) played before they were old enough for football”

But maybe I’m biased because I live in New England, the home of clueless bandwagon Patriots fans.

  4. Kyle says:

It’s worth mentioning that NFL kickers could kick MUCH further field goals (as evidenced by their kick-off distances), if they didn’t have to get the ball up and over the opposing team’s wall of players.

That’s cool and all, but not that impressive. Big difference between doing it in warm-ups or at halftime and doing it in the game. The record 63 yarder was scored in 1970. It’s only been equaled twice since then. Record was set by a guy named Tom Dempsey. He set the record kicking with a deformed foot (born without toes). Oh and he was a straight-forward kicker, soccer style kicking was a new phenomenon back then.

You guys do realize this guys isnt practicing how to kick an american football right? he’s basically just effin around and thats what makes it impressive

Where’s the witty reference to his howler against Bayern Munich?

  8. D3 says:

First, that kick was a bit low and probably would’ve been easily blocked. Second, The average football fan here probably wouldn’t care about the players, nor would most of them know who any of the individuals on the field were. There is still a good chance that they’ve at least heard of a couple teams, most likely Real Madrid, Man U or Arsenal through random sports news, however explaining the difference between domestic leagues, domestic cups during the season, the Champions league, and International play is always a bit… interesting. They want there to be playoffs so bad, it doesn’t make any sense

  9. dbm says:

American Football fans have just now come out of the dark ages. These days I get more feigned interest than the “you’re gay” taunts.

  10. Loling@ says:

Lol, I love how the commentator goes “sign him up!…” like Ramos would ever want to give up football for getting hit for a living.

  11. Cosa says:

Europeans again showing the Americans how to do it.
