Firstly, apologies for the shite headline. I couldn’t help myself. Anyway, on we go…

Bizarrely, coming into Saturday’s Olympic final, Brazil had never ever won a Olympic gold in football. And after a rather mediocre performance from the Samba superstars against a superb Mexican side, the gold once again eluded the star-studded side.

Mexico were by far the more organised side, with centre-half Diego Reyes outstanding. Both Mexico’s goals came courtesy of Oribe Peralta, a player who has struggled to break into the Mexican senior side. The Santos Laguna striker opened the scoring with just one minute played after Rafael made a right balls of things in the right-back position for Brazil.

Brazil worked hard to get back into the game, but the best chances still went to Mexico and with just 15 minutes left to play, Peralta, unmarked in the box, headed home to make it 2-0.

Brazil threw on Pato and Lucas Moura to save the day, and the Brazilian did get one back, courtesy of Hulk. Chelsea new-boy then missed a great chance at the death, but it was, once again, not to be for Brazil. Viva Mexico. Or something.

Oh, late on, Rafael made another error, and was duly reprimanded by team-mate Juan. The Man Utd defender wasn’t too pleased with this and a little argument ensued. Nothing more. After the game, BBC pundit Robbie Savage proceeded to judge Rafael on his behaviour – the most massive pot/kettle/black scenario of our times.

Merely apologising once isn’t enough. You’ll have to keep apologising for this terrible title for at least six months.
