He’s done it. Ladies and gentlemen, call off the search – we have a winner…

It’s official, ‘the record’ is now Lionel Messi’s thanks to a brace against Real Betis tonight. Messi’s first goal of the evening equalled Gerd Muller’s ‘goals in a calendar year for club and country’ record (goal no. 85) and his second of the night (no. 86) bested it…

Unbelievable. We’re in the presence of greatness here folks.

Barring the fact that a catatonic Pele is probably knelt in the corner of a darkened room somewhere feverishly whispering ‘Neymar’ over and over while stabbing darts through a picture of Leo with tears streaming down his face, surely – SURELY – there can be no debate as to Messi being the greatest player of all time?

Surely?

Yes and Muller scored 85 playing for fuckin barcelona.. Messi wouldn’t be the greatest if he didn’t play for barca

  2. KingB3113 says:

Couldn’t agree more, I’m not a Barca/Messi fan but it’s clear that he is the greatest of all time.

For some reason people are reluctant to proclaim current greats as better than the legends of old and this applies to all sports. ie. Boxing, basketball etc.

Probably The Best Title I have seen on Pies. So apt.#LivingFootballingLegend #PlaysFootyForTheLoveOfTheGame

  4. bk says:

I love barça and messi, but he must win a world cup to be the greatest

  5. Doctor's Your Uncle says:

    I’m gonna be that guy:
I want to see him perform for the Argentinian national team on a regular basis, away from the safe haven of a midfield where he is surrounded by Xavi, Iniesta etc.
Until that happens, I don’t think “the worlds greatest” can be applied. “one of the greatest”, sure, but not “the”.

  6. Mr Sensible says:

Yeah 31 goals for Argentina and a recent hatrick against Brazil is pretty average.

Not saying he’s the greatest (yet) but he is on his way. How some people try to compare Ronaldo is laughable.

  7. Moxey says:

He’s not even the greatest Argentinian player of all-time. As great as Messi unarguably is, Maradona dragged his country to the 1986 World Cup pretty much single-handedly. Argentina then were an average team elevated to best in the world level by one player (albeit a player who is a contender for biggest arsehole in football). As great as Pele was, Brazil could have won without him. In my opinion, Argentina wouldn’t have done the same without Maradona.

  8. Mb says:

greatest ATTACKING player of all time, perhaps, but i dont think there will ever be a conclusion as to who the greatest complete footballer of all time is…

  9. Miro says:

@ Doctor’s Your Uncle: 12 goals in 9 games for Argentina in 2012, you are right, he does not perform for national team

  10. Mitchell says:

It still took him 6-7 more games than Muller to do it.

  11. Kathies says:

You can’t call him the best player of all times, we’re still yet to see him play in goal or on the defence.

  12. alei says:

I have never seen a player get so much attention from the defenders as much as Messi does last week against benfica there was 9 players on him, and that was one of many of instances.
Every other week we see teams parking the bus against barca and yet this guy still gets that much goals. If hes not the greatest ever, hes defiantly the greatest goal scorer of all time.

  13. JONSTER says:

If I got half a chance I’d make sincere and unequivocal love to Imogen Thomas right now. I’ll bring up that baby as my own.

Topical news, people! In fairness ya would tho.

  14. One Man Went to Mow says:

Yeah, Yeah, but could he do it on a cold Tuesday in Preston?

… Probably yes, but then, he is that good that he doesn’t have to either.

  15. Davy says:

    Arrr He’s shit!!

  16. Anonymous says:

why is no one talking about iniesta’s assist for the 2nd…supoib

  17. Davy says:

I love Messi but here are my reasons that Maradona is the greatest of all time:

    • As far as anyone can or will do again he won a world cup single handed.
    • Messi would have to go to a Villareal and win titles with them to match Maradona’s achievements at Napoli.
    • Attacking players are completely protected these days with the slightest challenge warranting a yellow. Maradona was regularly maimed by the opposition before tackles from behind were outlawed.

  18. Anonymous says:

His body structure was created in a lab. Pele the greatest by God – Messi the greatest by science!

  19. moondunce says:

If I played with the same players as him at Barca, I’d get at least the half the no. of goals he gets in a calender year (and I don’t even have any legs!). Same goes with Ronaldo.

Falcao, on the other hand. Without a doubt the best striker and player in La Liga, if not, the world at this time.

But all that is academic. The Greatest Player Ever is Zizou.

  20. Miguel - NYC says:

    Haters gonna hate!

  21. dc says:

The greatest player ever is ____________ because of my own personal bias and emotional connection with him and that magical goal I watched him score in ________________

  22. Cristiano Ronaldo says:

Messi has more skill than Maradona and, regardless of what Maradona did in a world cup, he didn’t score as many as Messi, didn’t win as much as Messi and isn’t as good as Messi.
